GLP-1 Weight Loss Timeline: What to Expect Week by Week

One of the most common questions from people starting Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro is: how long will it take to see results? The honest answer is that it varies — but there are patterns that most people follow, and knowing them in advance helps you set realistic expectations and stay on track.

Weeks 1–4: The Adjustment Period

The first month is mostly about your body getting used to the medication. You’ll likely start on the lowest possible dose (0.25mg for Ozempic and Wegovy, 2.5mg for Mounjaro), which is intentionally below the therapeutic dose. During this period, most people notice:

  • Reduced appetite — sometimes dramatically so
  • Nausea, especially after eating or when first starting
  • Some weight loss, typically 1–3 lbs, mostly from eating less
  • Possible fatigue, headache, or digestive changes as your body adjusts

Don’t judge your long-term results by what you see in this first month. The goal right now is just to tolerate the medication and establish the habit.

Weeks 5–12: Dose Escalation and Early Results

Most protocols increase the dose every four weeks. By weeks 5–8 you’re typically on a higher dose, and the appetite suppression becomes more pronounced. This is where people start seeing more consistent weight loss.

  • Weight loss of roughly 0.5–1.5 lbs per week as eating patterns stabilise
  • Nausea often improves or disappears — the body adapts
  • Energy levels generally improve once you’re eating a more stable diet
  • Total weight loss of 5–10 lbs is common by the end of week 12

Months 3–6: The Main Phase of Weight Loss

By months 3 to 6, most people are on or near the full therapeutic dose, and this is typically when the most significant weight loss occurs. On average, people lose about 5–10% of their body weight in the first six months. So if you started at 200 lbs, that’s 10–20 lbs by month 6. Some people lose more, some less — it depends on dose, diet, exercise, and individual metabolism.

Months 6–12: Continued Loss and Plateau

Weight loss typically slows in the second half of the first year, but continues. Most people reach their maximum weight loss somewhere between 12 and 18 months on the medication. The clinical trials for Wegovy showed an average of about 15% total body weight loss at 68 weeks.

Plateaus are normal and expected. They don’t mean the medication has stopped working. Your body is recalibrating. Staying consistent with protein intake, movement, and sleep usually helps push through them.

What Affects How Fast You Lose Weight?

  • Dose — higher doses (when tolerated) produce more weight loss
  • Diet — reducing refined carbs and increasing protein speeds results significantly
  • Exercise — especially resistance training to preserve muscle
  • Starting weight — people with more to lose often see faster early results
  • Consistency — missing doses or stopping and restarting slows progress

The Bottom Line

Don’t expect dramatic results in the first month. Expect meaningful results by month 3, and significant results by month 6 to 12. The medication works — but it works slowly and consistently, not overnight. The people who do best are the ones who use the reduced appetite as an opportunity to build better habits, not just eat less of the same things.

Results vary from person to person. This timeline is based on clinical trial data and common reported experiences. Always follow the dosing schedule prescribed by your healthcare provider.
