Life happens. You forget, you travel, your medication gets delayed — and now you’re wondering whether to take the missed dose, skip it, or something else entirely. Here’s what you need to know.
First: Which GLP-1 Medication Are You On?
The guidance is different depending on whether your medication is injected once weekly (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound) or taken daily (Victoza, Saxenda, Rybelsus). Most people are on a once-weekly injectable, so this article focuses primarily on those.
Missing a Once-Weekly Injection
The general rule for once-weekly GLP-1 medications is:
- If you’re within 5 days of your missed dose: take it as soon as you remember
- If it’s been more than 5 days: skip it and continue with your next scheduled dose
- Never take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed one
After taking a delayed dose, simply continue on your normal schedule. You don’t need to reschedule everything — just go back to your regular injection day.
What to Expect After a Missed Dose
Missing one dose isn’t a catastrophe. These medications have a long half-life — meaning they stay active in your body for a week or more. One missed injection won’t undo your progress or cause your weight to spike.
Some people notice their appetite returns more strongly in the days leading up to their next injection after a missed dose. This is normal. It’s a signal to be mindful, not a reason to panic. Don’t overeat to compensate for feeling hungrier, and don’t restrict dramatically afterward to make up for it. Just go back to your normal routine.
What If You Miss Multiple Doses?
Missing several doses in a row is a different situation. If you’ve gone two weeks or more without your medication — due to supply issues, illness, or other reasons — you may need to restart at a lower dose to avoid side effects when you begin again. Talk to your prescribing doctor or pharmacist before resuming.
Daily GLP-1 Medications (Victoza, Saxenda, Rybelsus)
For daily injectables like Saxenda: if you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose at the usual time the following day. Do not double up.
For Rybelsus (the oral tablet): if you miss your morning dose, skip it for that day. Do not take it later in the day — it needs to be taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning to be absorbed properly.
The Bottom Line
Missing one weekly dose of a GLP-1 medication is not a big deal. Take it as soon as you remember if it’s within 5 days, skip it if not, and get back on your normal schedule. Don’t double dose, don’t panic, and don’t try to compensate with extreme eating behaviour in either direction.
